Why to Avoid Controversial SEO

By scott gallagher

Avoiding controversial, unethical, or unproved of SEO methods is sure to backfire on you sooner or later. Many people spend hours searching the internet for the latest in "black hat" SEO methods in order to take their internet marketing to the next level. However, due to the way the internet and search engines (especially Google) are constantly evolving, anyone who does find some of these more questionable tactics could quickly shoot themselves in the foot.

Some of these methods may work very well in the short term, and could shoot a site quickly up the rankings. However, there is a downside to utilizing these methods. They are deemed controversial or questionable for a reason, and there is always a backlash against them. Internet marketing masters have always found ways to circumvent temporarily the restrictions placed on them but, as the internet evolves, the search engines change their algorithms to compensate for those who may be employing unsavory tactics during the promoting of their website.

What this means is that, if you are implementing some of the tactics that are controversial or generally looked down upon, what you may see is a short term increase in the rankings. You may see a result from shady internet marketing practices, but it is usually only going to be a short term solution. These methods always spread like wildfire as everyone attempts to hop on the latest internet marketing bandwagon. Once this happens, Google will usually issue a new algorithm that is not only going to fail to recognize those tactics in the future, but can also potentially slam the sites employing those tactics in the rankings; sending them even further back than they were when they began.

If you are implementing a serious internet marketing campaign for a long term investment of a website, you should instead look for legitimate and time tested ways to build the popularity of the site. By relying on methods that are above the board and approved of by the search engines in order to increase a site''s rankings, you will slowly progress through the rankings. This, of course, depends on the amount of time or money you invest in the site but, more importantly, you aren"t likely to suddenly plummet through the rankings due to a change in how the robots work. Don"t engage in shady internet marketing practices and you won"t be punished for it; it''s as simple as that. There will always be those who engage in such practices, but they are unlikely to see the benefits that you will see in the long run.
