In Search Of Internet Optimization

By Art Gib

Every single day all over the world people sitting at their computers search the internet for shopping ideas, businesses and things to do. Within moments the results of a search engine are reported back on the screen and the information is listed from top to bottom based on what is deemed to be the most relevant and reliable by the search engine.

The majority of searches return several pages of results related to the item in question. However most web surfers rarely make it past the second page of results before clicking on one of the displayed web links. As a link is clicked the searcher is redirected away from the search engine site to a website that belongs to the service or product provider that was linked to the results page.

Because very few people bother to scroll through to the second or third page of search engine results it is vital to businesses to have a strong web presence on the internet by developing optimized websites that will show up on the first page of search engine results. Having a presence that consistently appears within the top search results is possible through internet marketing. Business owners know that having a competitive advantage makes the difference between being somewhat successful and having astronomical success.

The internet is not a good old boy network of who knows whom and has not been built by individuals that want to block newcomers from entering the marketplace. Unlike brick and mortar businesses that have developed a strong presence and standing in the community over many years internet businesses that utilize the campaigns and strategies associated with online marketing can rise to the top of the search engines in a relatively short amount of time. In cyberspace what you know counts for more than whom you know. The internet is not biased and does not choose one website over another based on favoritism.

Search engines pull results based on analytical data that is stored by index. When a search is initiated the engine retrieves information based on how closely a website is in relation to the relevant content of the search and the reputation of the site for being consistent with the search criteria. Optimization of keywords, meta tags and descriptions all aid the search engine in indexing information about a website so that when a search is conducted the information can be retrieved quickly as it relates to the subject of the search. With the ever growing number of people utilizing internet search engines to research and find businesses it is becoming ever more important for businesses to have an internet marketing strategy in place.
